Why This Matters Now In The UAE

Google began rolling out AI Mode across the Middle East and North Africa in August 2025, starting in English, with gradual access for UAE users, as Gulf News reported at launch. Arabic support has followed. AI Overviews, the AI summaries at the top of normal results, were already showing in the UAE before that.

The way people search changes when they can ask a full question. Gulf News reported that early AI Mode users were asking questions two to three times longer than a standard search. Instead of typing “dentist JLT”, a customer now asks something like “Which dental clinic near JLT is open on Saturday evening and does Invisalign?”. Google answers that with a summary and a handful of links and businesses. If your website and Business Profile don’t contain those details, Google has nothing to say about you.

That is why this is a website question as much as a marketing one. Many small business sites in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah are a single page with a slogan, a gallery and a contact form. They look fine, but they say very little that Google can use to answer a specific question.

What Google Actually Says

Google’s guidance on AI features and your website is short and clear. To be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Google states there are no additional technical requirements, and that you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org structured data.

The best practices it lists are the same foundations as normal SEO:

  • Let Google crawl your site, in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting firewall settings.
  • Make every important page reachable through internal links.
  • Give visitors a good page experience, especially on mobile.
  • Keep important content available as text, not only inside images or PDFs.
  • Support your text with good images and video where they help.
  • Make sure any structured data matches what is visible on the page.
  • Keep your Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date.

Google also notes that showing in these features is never guaranteed. Anyone who promises you a place in AI Overviews is promising something Google itself does not.

The “AI SEO” Claims You Can Ignore

Since AI search arrived, a wave of agencies have started selling “GEO” or “AEO” packages to UAE businesses. Some advice is sensible, but much of it is ordinary SEO with a new name and a higher price. Be sceptical of anyone who tells you that you must:

  • Add an llms.txt or other “AI file”. Google says no new machine-readable or AI text files are needed for its AI features.
  • Add special AI schema. Google says there is no special structured data required. Normal structured data, such as LocalBusiness details that match your page, is still useful for rich results.
  • Pay for guaranteed AI placement. Inclusion is decided by Google’s systems. Nobody can guarantee it.
  • Publish dozens of thin pages for every keyword variation. Google’s helpful content guidance rewards original, useful content made for people. Mass-produced pages work against you.

A Website Checklist For Local Businesses

Think about the questions your best customers ask on the phone or on WhatsApp before they book. Then make sure your website answers them in plain text. For most UAE service businesses, that means:

  1. One page per main service. A page for “AC maintenance” and another for “AC duct cleaning” gives Google far more to work with than one “Services” page with six icons.
  2. The specifics customers filter on. Areas you cover (Dubai Marina, Al Barsha, Khalifa City, Al Nahda), opening hours including Friday and weekend hours, languages spoken, price ranges or “from” prices, accepted insurance, and licences or approvals where relevant.
  3. Text, not pictures of text. Menus, price lists and brochures uploaded only as images are hard for search systems to read. Put the key details on the page as HTML text.
  4. Real answers to real questions. A short FAQ on each service page, written in your own words, with clear and direct answers.
  5. Proof you are who you say you are. Your trade name, address, phone number, team and real project photos. Generic stock imagery tells Google and customers nothing.
  6. A crawlable, fast, mobile-friendly build. Check that your hosting firewall or bot protection isn’t blocking Googlebot, that pages load quickly on a phone, and that every page has a unique title and description.
  7. Separate English and Arabic pages, if you serve both. Google’s multilingual site guidance recommends a separate URL for each language rather than switching language on one page.

This is how we structure every website we design for UAE businesses: one clear page per service, the details customers actually search for, and a build that Google can crawl and render.

Your Business Profile And Reviews Still Do The Heavy Lifting

For local searches, AI answers draw heavily on the same information that powers Google Maps. Google’s own advice for AI features is to keep your Business Profile up to date. Its local ranking guidance says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.

In practice, that means:

How To Tell If It Is Working

Google includes traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Search Console Performance report, under the “Web” search type. There is no separate magic dashboard, so the basics apply:

  • Verify your site in Google Search Console and watch impressions and clicks for your service pages.
  • Track enquiries, calls and WhatsApp clicks as conversions in Google Analytics, not just visits. Google says clicks from AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, so conversions matter more than raw traffic.
  • Ask new customers how they found you, and add “Google AI answer” as an option in your enquiry form.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an llms.txt file for Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Your pages need to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.

Can I pay to appear in Google AI Mode answers?

No. Which websites are shown as sources is decided by Google’s systems, and Google says inclusion isn’t guaranteed. Ads are a separate, labelled product. Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed AI placement.

Does Google AI Mode work in Arabic in the UAE?

Yes. AI Mode launched in the region in English in August 2025 and Google has since added Arabic. If you serve both audiences, publish separate English and Arabic pages so each language can be found.

Can I stop my website appearing in AI Overviews?

Google supports the nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex controls to limit how your content is shown in Search, including AI features. They also limit your normal search snippets, so most local businesses are better off leaving them out.
